Spyro the Dragon is reportedly getting a PS4 remaster this year
Fan-favorite PlayStation hero Spyro the Dragon will be the next classic series to get the remaster treatment, according to a report by Kotaku.
The report says that a fully remastered Spyro trilogy will be announced next month and release some time in Q3 of 2018, most likely September. It is under development by Vicarious Visions, the same studio that developed last year's Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.
The remaster will be very similar to the Crash remaster, which featured new assets, lighting, animations, cinematics, and a remastered soundtrack. The report also claims that it will feature updates to the save feature with something way more user friendly.
Spyro the Dragon originally released in 1998, with its sequel Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! coming shortly after in 1999. The finale of the trilogy, Spyro: Year of the Dragon, released in 2000.
After that, the Spyro series took a turn to multiplatform spin-offs as well as handheld games, and a series reboot in 2006 that was less-than-stellar. Spyro and his friends entered the mainstream again in 2011 with the Skylanders toys-to-life action games.
To date, the Spyro series has sold more than 20 million units worldwide. If the reported remaster is received anything like last year's Crash Bandicoot remaster, that total should be adding quite a few more in 2018.
