Fornite developer Epic Games is looking to shut down cheaters by taking them to court.
A report from TorrentFreak suggests the Fortnite developer has filed at least two lawsuits against two of its most notorious cheaters. After Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode was released, an influx of cheaters invaded the title: Epic has since worked to shut them down. Thousands of accounts have since been banned.
“To start, addressing cheaters in Fortnite is the highest priority across Epic Games,” said Epic community coordinator Nathan Mooney in a statement on Oct. 4. “We are constantly working against both the cheaters themselves and the cheat providers. And it’s ongoing, we’re exploring every measure to ensure these cheaters are removed and stay removed from Fortnite Battle Royale and the Epic ecosystem. We don’t want to give too many clues about what we’re doing, but we are rolling out tools and will continue to do so.”
As it turns out, one of those steps involves legal action. The targeted cheaters, Brandon Broom and Charles Vraspir, are allegedly support staff on cheat website AddictedCheats, which sells cheats and hacks. Both Broom and Vraspir are alleged to have encouraged others to buy cheats.
“Nobody likes a cheater,” the document reads. “And nobody likes playing with cheaters. These axioms are particularly true in this case. Defendant uses cheats in a deliberate attempt to destroy the integrity of, and otherwise wreak havoc in, the Fortnite game.”
The document continues: “As Defendant intends, this often ruins the game for other players, and for the many people who watch ‘streamers.'”
Both players have been banned multiple times, according to the court documents obtained by TorrentFreak, but continue to create new accounts to access Fortnite.
The cheating players implicated in the case will face charges up to $150,000 in “statutory damages,” according to TorrentFreak. As mentioned, these are just two cheaters in a game rife with violators, but the extreme steps Epic is taking to wipe out bad behavior certainly sends a clear message.
