Destiny 2's Control PvP mode is getting a rework
Destiny's capture-and-defend game mode, Control, is coming back for Destiny 2, and Bungie outlined some changes that are being made to better the experience.
Crucible design lead Lars Bakken sat down with IGN to go over the changes, and they are all centered around the game's new four-on-four playstyle.
One of the things players will notice right away is that each team's home flag (A and C) will be captured automatically, meaning players will be fighting for B flag right out of the gates. This will immediately create a big-time skirmish in the first few seconds of the match, as players won't have to sit on a home flag to start earning points.
The way you earn those points is also different now, as the scoring system has received a big tweak. Each kill results in one point, but those points are multiplied by how many flags your team is holding. If you hold two of the three flags, each kill will be worth two points. If your team holds all three flags, now called a "Power Play," each kill will be worth three points.
The way that flags are captured will also be different. You will no longer need to neutralize an enemy flag before capturing it, and there is a set capture timer that is no longer affected by adding more people to the point as it's being taken.
"We wanted to make the game feel more tactical and understandable," said Bakken. "That's the reasoning behind not wanting multiple players to be on the zone at the same time. Players will still do these things, of course, because old habits die hard. Once you get a feel for it, the game starts to flow in a really fun and interesting way."
Bakken also said that matches are shorter, "about 8 minutes long," and that all of these design changes are deliberate for balance.
IGN also released another video revealing a brand new Crucible map called Endless Vale, which will be featured in the Destiny 2 beta. The beta begins early for PlayStation 4 pre-orders on July 18, and opens to everybody on PS4 and Xbox One on July 21.
