With Destiny 2's beta just coming to an end, Bungie and Activision have announced a brand new preorder bonus for the game, and it's a really cool one.

Preordering the game on any platform will grant you access to a new exotic trace rifle called Coldheart. It's the first of its kind, being the first trace rifle ever shown, and it's an energy weapon that's meant for single target DPS.

Up until this point, the three elements in Destiny have been Arc (lightning), Solar (fire/the sun), and Void (dark energy), but Coldheart uses what's being called "experimental energy" that is clearly reminiscent of ice. But Bungie senior gameplay designer Jon Weisnewski confirmed on Twitter that the weapon would do Arc damage.

The trace rifle could be an entirely new class of weapon, as Coldheart is different from any weapon in the game—since it fires a constant beam of energy. Destiny 2 has changed the game in a big way when it comes to weapons, ditching the previous setup of Primary, Special, and Heavy weapons, for the new Kinetic, Energy, and Power weapons. It has also added a new weapon types in linear fusion rifles, submachine guns, and grenade launchers. It looks like trace rifles could be joining the fray too.

Although the weapon does Arc damage, you can't deny its aesthetic. Coldheart could potentially be the beginnings of a fourth new element in the series, which could open up the door for all new subclasses one day down the line. Just imagine the possibilities of ice-based subclasses for Warlock, Titan, and Hunter. It's exciting.

The legal language at the end of the trailer shows that Coldheart and all other preorder bonuses will be available in the game starting on Dec. 5. Destiny 2 releases on Sept. 6 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and on Oct. 24 on PC.
