The Game Awards founder teases big Tomb Raider announcement

Lara Croft will return in some capacity in 2026.

The slew of upcoming game news that accompanies every year’s The Game Awards has already begun with an announcement (of a coming announcement) from the show’s founder and host Geoff Keighley for a long dormant series: Tomb Raider.

Over seven years since its last mainline entry, 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the iconic adventure series will have some sort of big announcement at The Game Awards 2025 later this week.

The news follows tweets from Keighley and the official Tomb Raider account, each of which share similar language. What exactly this news will be isn’t yet clear, and while it does seem likely to be a new game, it could also be tied to the upcoming TV show from Prime Video.

What is the Tomb Raider announcement?

First revealed in a Fortnite map portal (where fans can vote for TGA and view special announcements in-game), Tomb Raider has been confirmed for an announcement at The Game Awards this Thursday. Geoff Keighley, host and creator of the award show, tweeted shortly after, “as just revealed in our The Game Awards Vote in Fortnite map portal, tune in Thursday for a look at the future of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises, Tomb Raider.”

The official Tomb Raider account followed up this news by posting, “Did you miss her? She missed you.”

While it does make the most sense that Tomb Raider would make a video game announcement at The Game Awards, it is telling that neither Keighley nor the official Tomb Raider account mentioned video games explicitly in their tweets. The one major announcement these tweets could be hinting at, besides a game, is the upcoming live-action show in development with Prime Video.

This series was announced as early as Jan. 2023 with Sophie Turner of Game of Thrones fame attached to play Lara Croft. The show will reportedly begin filming this next January, which makes an announcement at The Game Awards an almost perfect timing. The Game Awards has always embraced every type of gaming media, especially live-action adaptations like HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime’s Fallout, so building hype for a live-action Tomb Raider show would make sense.

Alternatively, another game in the Tomb Raider series is long overdue. In fact, a game was already announced all the way back in 2022 by Crystal Dynamics. This game, built with Unreal Engine 5, hasn’t released any solid information like a title or general release date ever since its initial announcement. However, if it’s been in development all this time, an announcement trailer at The Game Awards 2025 would be completely on track with typical game development timelines.

Any new media would be welcome news for the Tomb Raider fanbase, which has effectively been in hibernation ever since 2018 besides a mobile game and a few remastered collections released in the interim. Either way, this year’s Game Awards are shaping up to be full of some exciting announcements, especially with mysterious demonic statues popping up in the desert.
