In Memory of Gabe was one of many teams that was created in the wake of the so-called "Rosterpocalypse" that happened after each season. The team comprised of former SoaR Gaming teammates and iconic duo lane Snoopy and Eonic, Flash Point eSports midlaner Hurriwind, who had been left without his friend and longtime teammate Homiefe after Homiefe's departure for SoaR Gaming, Noble eSports solo laner hopeful Whalrus and former Xbox jungler Cynosure. The team was named for Gabe the Dog, a miniature American Eskimo and Pomeranian mixed dog who had been become an internet meme during his lifetime for his audibly pleasing bark noises, phonetically written as "bork". Gabe the Dog's "borks" were edited onto many videos and remixed innumerable times. Gabe the Dog passed away on 20 January 2017, with the SMITE team created the next day.
In Memory of Gabe was seen as a potential superteam alongside the new SoaR Gaming, however, going unsponsored, In Memory of Gabe would have to fight its way into the SPL. It accomplished the first half of its goal by crushing the Open Qualifier that would lead to the Spring Relegations, without losing a single game. And while they showed great strength during the SPL Spring Season, teams like Team Eager and Luminosity were just better, causing the team to get a still solid 4th place.
Before the Spring Gauntlet, the team was picked up by Carbon Six. Met with immediate community backlash, Carbon Six refused to provide jerseys, leaving the players unable to compete in the Gauntlet. However, Carbon Six was acquired by Most Wanted eSports the next day, which provided the necessary jerseys, saving the team from its fate, while also releasing them from contract.
