Next year, Overwatch League fans will be able to show support for their favorite team with in-game skins.
Overwatch League commissioner Nate Nanzer announced on Dec. 4 that Overwatch League home team skins—those are the more colorful ones—will be available for purchase starting in early 2018.
All 26 heroes in Overwatch will have a jersey for each of the 12 Overwatch League teams.
“Purchasing Overwatch League skins will provide monetary support for teams in the league,” Nanzer said in a video on YouTube. Blizzard has developed a separate currency system specifically for the Overwatch League skins to ensure the correct amount of money goes to the teams.
League tokens will only be used for Overwatch League in-game content, Nanzer said. Once you’ve got the Overwatch League tokens, you’ll be able to buy whatever Overwatch League skins you want—no loot boxes here. All Overwatch players across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC will receive enough tokens to purchase one Overwatch League skin for the first month after launch, Nanzer added.
The commissioner didn’t mention whether tokens will only be available via purchase, or if tokens—or Overwatch League skins—will drop in loot boxes. Likewise, Nanzer did not state the portion of proceeds that will go to the team, or how much the tokens and skins will cost. Dot Esports has reached out to Blizzard for clarification.
Overwatch League’s preseason exhibition matches begin Dec. 6. The regular season will kick off Jan. 10.
