Overwatch is free for the month of May—but only in China

The event starts May 1.

Are you without a game to play? You’re in luck—if you’re in China: Overwatch will be free in the country for the entire month of May.

All 24 heroes and 14 maps will be free to play from May 1 until May 31, though only in quick play, against AI, custom games, and in the arcade. Competitive play will be off-limits to free Overwatch players.

Any progress made during the free month of Overwatch, like levels or loot acquired, will translate over if you decide to buy the game, as long as the same account is used. Competitive mode, too, will become available for those who buy Overwatch after the free period.

Overwatch lead software engineer Bill Warnecke confirmed on Reddit that the free month is only for China. Blizzard has implemented free periods worldwide, like a free weekend in November of last year for all regions, but it’s never been quite so generous with its length.

To play, you just have to install the Blizzard game client and create a Blizzard account. If you already have one, you’re already good to go. Install Overwatch, and you’ll be able to log into the game for free.

One month of free Overwatch is the perfect length to get someone hooked: We predict China’s going to see quite a few new players buying the game once the free period is over. It’s just too bad it’s starting after the super fun Overwatch Uprising event ends on May 1.
