First MGA Overwatch Championship will Feature $75,000 Prize Pool
MSI gives Overwatch another small step into becoming a household esports title.
The Overwatch 2016 Master Gaming Arena Championship will be held at the GFinity Arena in London, United Kingdom on Dec. 7-8, 2016, MSI announced Monday.
The prize pool for this event will be $75,000, with the champion squad taking home $40,000. This will be the third largest prize pool in Overwatch's young history as an esport, and the winner's share will tie the ESL Overwatch Atlantic Showdown for the second largest single prize in Overwatch esports, per esportsearnings.com.
Only four teams will compete in London and take a share of the $75,000 prize pool, with one team qualifying from each of the Americas, European, and Asian regions. Each region will hold online qualifiers, which will have up to 128 teams, between Oct. 4-11. The top eight teams will move on to the regional finals, which will be held between Oct. 14-21.
The fourth team in the event will be picked by MSI to compete in the Grand Finals with the three other teams, although it is unconfirmed how MSI will select the last participant.
All four teams, including the MSI-sponsored team, will have travel to London and related expenses covered by the tournament's sponsor.
