Brigitte’s release last year gave rise to one of the biggest backlashes an Overwatch hero launch has received. The widely-voiced disdain for the support hero continues to exist almost a full year following her release, which has led many Overwatch fans to harass the character’s voice actress, Matilda Smedius.

The 21-year-old voice actress first mentioned the harassment in a Twitter post, expressing her confusion over a message she received saying Brigitte had “destroyed Overwatch and [its] meta.”

“I’m so sorry for tweeting about this, I really only want to spread love and positivity,” Smedius said in the Twitter thread. “I just don’t understand the point of people doing this. I just DON’T UNDERSTAND.”

The tweet made its way to the Overwatch subreddit, garnering a mixture of both support and additional negativity. Smedius then responded to the backlash a second time by posting a video to YouTube four days later, thanking her supporters and further explaining the reasoning behind her initial tweet.

“I was just kind of fed up with those messages popping up all the time,” the voice actress said. “I don’t understand why someone would write that. I don’t understand why people hashtag #DeleteBrig on my pictures or call me fat. I don’t understand the point.”

Before Smedius ended the video, she left her supporters with a tearful message.

“It makes me so happy that people like what I do, and it makes this whole thing so much easier because I know that I have you guys, and I have the wonderful people at Blizzard and the wonderful voice actors in Overwatch,” Smedius said.
