Riot announces new 10 ban system coming for spring
Riot Games has finally announced that the new 10 ban system will be implemented into the upcoming spring split.
In a post on League of Legends’s official website, Riot Meddler explained the reason for more bans. “In pro play, we think pick/ban changes can lead to an increase in champion diversity and strategic play," Meddler said. "We believe that offering more bans will encourage deeper champion pools with more individual champions seeing the Rift - and that it’ll make a fun and engaging draft phase for fans to watch. The plan here is to give each team two additional bans partway through the draft; this midpoint ban should encourage adaptability and reward teams who can accurately predict what strategies their opponents are planning then move swiftly to counter them.”
The new banning system will be divided into four phases. The first phase will be the same as it is now, where each side bans three champions back and forth. The second phase will now have the blue side pick their first champion, then red side picks two. Blue then picks two, and red picks their final champion to even the champions picked. In the third phase, the last two bans are carried out in an alternating fashion, with red banning first. The final phase of the new banning system will have both sides pick their final two champions, with red side picking once, blue picking twice, and red getting the final champion pick.
Riot Meddler ended the announcement saying that this new ban system won’t hit matchmaking yet. Riot is still trying to tweak the system so it works best in ranked/normal games online. Riot is also still trying to address some of their concerns about the 10 ban system, such as the amount of time it takes.
