Riot Games announced a new League of Legends Mordekaiser skin on Feb. 17 called Sahn-Uzal. However, in response to the news, players praised another fan-made costume that’s composed of… Hextech chests.
The League community has been asking Riot to return Hextech Chests to the game for weeks now. At the beginning of February, the developer said it won’t do it and explained its reasoning behind the decision. That’s why the social media has been flooded with posts related to the chests, and after Sahn-Uzal Morderkaiser’s announcement, one player proposed their Hextech chest alternative. It’s currently on top of the League subreddit.
The skin is as bizarre as you could imagine. This time, Mordekaiser isn’t wielding a real mace, but is instead holding a chest that’s bigger than his head. The champion’s shoulders, head, and torso have also been transformed into Hextech chests as well, though they have a slightly different color than his mace.
It’s obviously a satire, but players love it. “Finally a skin with quality and soul,” one of the comments reads. “I unironically like how it looks. Would be amazing if it had a custom ‘opening chest’ animation on his maze when he ults. And the Death Realm is just a Riot logo with red arrows VFX going down,” another one added.
While the skin is conquering Reddit, the outcry for the lack of Hextech chests is spreading across all social media, including X/Twitter. Players have replied with numerous satire Hextech chest-like fan-made champions to League’s announcement of the Sahn-Uzal skin. As it stands, you could scroll the replies for ages and wouldn’t be able to find one that isn’t similar.
Further adding to player ire, the Sahn-Uzal Mordekaiser skin will be available in the Sanctum, which is essentially a gacha system. Players may purchase Ancient Sparks for Riot Points, which can be then spent to pull a random skin from one of three tiers.
Hextech chests were removed from the game at the beginning of 2025. Players quickly started demanding Riot add them back, but to no avail so far. Riot addressed the situation on Feb. 7. “[Hextech chests] Unintentionally became the primary way to unlock skins. […] That did lead to a great player experience, but it was not sustainable for League in the long term,” the developer said. Players, however, weren’t satisfied with the response.
“The game is falling into a pit, and you’re doing nothing to prevent it; in fact, you’re contributing to it with every decision you make. Free Hextech Chests removed, mediocre Battle Passes, terrible skin quality, overpriced skins, Mythic Essence now being “premium,” gacha system,” one League content creator responded.
