Is Blackrock Mountain coming to Hearthstone?

With PAX East just around the corner, Hearthstone fans are getting ready for big announcements—especially in regards to new expansions. Last year, the conference was where the Curse of Naxxramas, the game’s first expansion, was revealed. Now, a new patch for the game may just have pointed to what’s coming at PAX East.

The small patch, which has yet to go live, adds some data to the game that suggests the next expansion will be centred around Blackrock Mountain, an iconic location in World of Warcraft.

Two card backs appear to coming in the patch, “Ragnaros” and “Molten Core.” The patch also includes a new achievement, “purchase brm presale.” You’ll be able to get the Ragnaros card back through ranked play, but it’s not clear what will unlock Molten Core.

Blackrock Mountain includes World of Warcraft’s first two 40-man raids, Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, as well as the classic 10-man dungeon Upper Blackrock Spire. The mountain continues to be a relevant and nostalgic location in Warcraft for even current players.

Of course Ragnaros is the final boss in Molten Core but, unlike Kel’thuzad in Curse of Naxxramas, the fire lord is already in Hearthstone and has been since the beginning.

If Blackwing Lair is included in the new adventure, expect to see other villains like Nefarian entering your card collection.

PAX East was also where Hearthstone itself was first announced, so the community will certainly be paying attention when lead game designer Eric Dodds takes the stage on March 6.
