Hearthstone flies past 25 million registered users
Maybe you've seen people playing it on the bus, or sneaking a game in at work. Maybe you watched your favorite League of Legends streamer play it in the queue. This much is obvious: a lot of people are playing Hearthstone. But now, we know exactly just how popular Blizzard's digital card game really is: 25 million people have signed up to play the game.
In Activision Blizzard's fourth quarter earnings report, the company revealed that Hearthstone passed a total of 25 million registered users, adding more than five million new users in the past three months.
The growth of Hearthstone has been swift. The game reached 10 million players just days after it launched in March. In September, it reached a new milestone: 20 million, which came hot on the heels of the iPad release. And now it appears that the combination of the Android tablet release and the Goblins vs Gnomes expansion have driven the game to new heights.
Blizzard is planning more expansions for the game in 2015, including a much-anticipated smartphone release. So don't be surprised if those user numbers grow even bigger this year.
"Our amazingly talented teams will continue to produce the world’s best content for gamers,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement, “We have a growing portfolio of the very best franchises and great confidence in our future."
The company also posted a net revenue of $1.7 billion in 2014, up from $1.1 billion in 2013.
