Twitch's 'BIG' news? Its first convention

Today the esports and gaming community waited with bated breath for what Twitch called “our BIGGEST news of the year” in a teaser email, set to be announced on their weekly Twitch show.

“I’m glad to finally have these words come out of my mouth,” Marcus “DJWheat” Graham, the show’s host, opened, adding that it’s something people have been waiting for for years. “Twitch purple hoodie up on Amazon.com for $34.99!”

“I’m putting on my best kappa face,” Ben “Fishstix” Goldhaber replies.

“Kappa,” of course, is Twitch talk for sarcasm. Purple hoodies are, in fact, not available on Amazon. But what is actually happening is something people have looked forward to for years—Twitch’s own live event.

The first ever Twitchcon will hit San Francisco on Sept. 25-26  at the Moscone West Convention Center. That’s the extent of the details Graham said they could reveal at this point, but you can sign up for future updates on the event here.

“Twitch broadcasters have the most passionate fans, so we want to create an amazing experience where they can come together in person,” Twitch CEO Emmett Shear said. “TwitchCon will be an opportunity for the entire community—broadcasters, game developers, viewers, and us—to play and learn together.”

The event is labelled as a “celebration of all things Twitch” and will be co-produced by ReedPOP, which produces events like PAX and Comic Con.

The company has been hinting at an event for years. Just two months ago, they posted a poll asking if the community would attend such an event.

The overwhelming answer, of course, was yes. Now they’ll have the chance in September.
