Want to capture the legendaries in Pokémon Go? Look no further than this handy guide.

If you are new to Pokémon Go and new to capturing legendaries, then this article will prepare you to get outside and capture some serious Pokémon. Legendaries, long rumored and then teased by Niantic, were added in July, with the addition of a complete gym overhaul and raid changes. The changes to the raid system didn’t end there: Raikou, Entei, and Suicune were recently added to the legendary monster roster for you to capture. Each Pokémon is will be limited to a specific region until Sept. 30, until they move on to a new region. On Oct. 31, they'll move to the next location.

If you’re living in a city that’s well populated with trainers, then you should be able to find fellow players hanging out at landmarks who are easily recruitable into your raid team. If you find it tough to locate fellow trainers (if you live in a small town, you might have this problem), then you might want to join a Pokémon Facebook Group or a Discord. If you’re not sure how, then I’ve done a small bit of heavy lifting for you:

The need for such advanced communication will become a tad obsolete when Niantic introduces the EX Raid timers. These timers will give you and your teammates enough time to mobilize, charge extra battery pack, and pack enough protein bars to keep your energy up. These raids are not short at all.

Legendaries and their CP

As a regular Pokémon Go player, you will be aware of the lengths you need to go to when on a raid. Legendary Raid Pokémon have the highest CP of any creature in Pokémon Go. Take Zapdos for example; the legendary bird has a CP of 42,691 so during the raids over the summer, it took more than just a raid pass to defeat.

Defeating Raikou

Raikou is a legendary raid boss who is currently available to battle throughout the Americas until Sept 30. If you were thinking you could tackle Raikou alone, then you are gravely mistaken. The Johto beast should only be tackled if your raid party consists of six to seven trainers. Raikou is a pure electric type, which means the Pokémon you need to use for this battle need to be of ground type—Raikou is susceptible to ground counters, especially attackers with access to Earthquake (Rhydon, Golem, Donphan, Sandslash, Nidoking).

Defeating Raikou in Pokémon Go is a standard raid battle—Raikou does not have a second type unlike over legendaries. If you’re looking to capture Raikou, you need to make sure CP is down to 1913.

Raikou TL;DR:

  • CP 42932
  • Team of 6-7 trainers to defeat
  • Max Capture CP 1913
  • Ground counters work best
  • Suggested Pokémon to use:
  • Rhydon (Mud-Slap / Earthquake)
  • Golem (Mud-Slap / Earthquake)
  • Donphan (Tackle / Earthquake)
  • Tyranitar (Bite / Crunch / Stone Edge)
  • Sandslash
  • Currently only available in the Americas.

Defeating Entei

Entei is a legendary raid boss who is currently available to battle throughout Europe and Africa until Sept. 30. There’s no way you can defeat Entei alone so make sure to join a clan of trainers averaging between six to seven players. Entei is a pure fire type, which results in a large variety of strong and easily available counters. It’s time to show Entei what you’ve got.

Preparation is key when taking on the legendary and because the fire type is weak to Ground, Rock, and Water Pokémon the choice is yours. Dragonite can counter with outrage, while Rhydon can also counter with Stone Edge; Entei’s CP is 38628 so you need to make sure the monsters you pick are high level and at full strength.

Entei TL;DR:

  • CP 38628
  • Team of 6-7 trainers to defeat
  • Max Capture CP 1930
  • Ground, rock, water counters work best
  • Suggested Pokémon to use:
  • Omastar (Rock Throw / Hydro Pump)
  • Vaporeon (Water Gun / Hydroi Pump)
  • Golem (Rock Throw / Stone Edge)
  • Tyranitar (Bite / Stone Edge)
  • Currently only available in Europe and Africa.

Defeating Suicune

Suicune is a legendary raid boss who's available to battle throughout the Asia-Pacific region until Sept. 30. There’s no way you can defeat Suicune alone, so make sure to join a clan of trainers averaging between six to seven players. If you attempt to take it on alone, then you will fail constantly. Suicune is a pure water type and in many ways, is a similar weaker version of Lugia.

When taking on Suicune, it is wise to bring along Pokémon that are either electric type or grass type. Raikou, after you’ve captured it, is the best Poké to bring to this battle due to the Thunder Shock and Wild Charge counters. The same goes for Zapdos with its Charge Beam and Thunderbolt counters.

If you’re yet to take down a legendary, then Suicune can be countered with a high-level Venusaur and Dragonite.

Suicune TL;DR:

  • CP 34471
  • Team of 6-7 trainers to defeat
  • Max Capture CP 1613
  • Electric and grass counters work best
  • Suggested Pokémon to use:
  • Raikou (Thunder Shock / Wild Charge)
  • Zapdos (Charge Beam / Thunderbolt)
  • Exeggutor (Confusion / Solar Beam)
  • Dragonite (Dragon Tail / Outrage)
  • Venusaur (Razor Leaf / Solar Beam)
  • Currently available only in Asia-Pacific.

Good luck trainers.
