Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2 is set for a 2018 release, and fans are already eager to get their hands on the second installment in the Western open-world series. Originally revealed in late 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Red Dead Redemption 2 plans to improve on the original game, introducing a new protagonist while building off the classic action gameplay that made Red Dead Redemption one so memorable.

Information on Red Dead Redemption 2 is still developing, as more info has yet to be revealed by Rockstar about the game. There are some clues out there right now for fans that want to know about outlaw Arthur Morgan and his gang. Here's everything officially announced on Red Dead Redemption 2.

Release date

Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently slated for a Q2 2018 release, after being pushed from Autumn 2017. An official release date has yet to be announced.

Platforms

Red Dead Redemption 2 launches for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. No other platforms have been officially announced as of yet, with some speculating if the Nintendo Switch or PC will see its own release.

Story

Red Dead Redemption 2 serves as a prequel to the original Red Dead Redemption, following Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they journey across the American West as partners in crime. It's unclear if John Marston will appear with his former gang, but Dutch van der Linde does in the September 2017 trailer, and some fans allege that Bill Williamson appears too. So Marston may end up making an appearance.

Otherwise, expect the same classic Red Dead Redemption experience. After all, on the game's official website, Rockstar calls Red Dead Redemption 2 "an epic tale of life in America's unforgiving heartland," with a "vast and atmospheric world." That sounds similar to Red Dead Redemption's original storyline and premise.

Gameplay

Red Dead Redemption 2 builds off the first game's setting and gameplay, with enhanced graphics thanks to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One's improved processors and graphical capabilities. Open-world single-player gameplay will return, as well as an "online multiplayer experience." For now, though, gameplay information remains limited until Rockstar Games officially reveals more about Red Dead Redemption 2's upcoming features.

Development

Red Dead Redemption 2 was originally planned for a fall 2017 release, but Rockstar announced the game would be delayed in May 2017. According to an official post, Rockstar wanted to bump the game's launch date in order to optimize the game for current-generation consoles.

"This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans," Rockstar wrote.

The game's second trailer suggests that Red Dead Redemption 2's development is coming along well, with Rockstar introducing fans to the second game's characters for the first time. It remains unclear if Red Dead Redemption 2 will maintain its Q2 2018 release date, however, or if Rockstar will delay the game again.
