PUBG's official launch date pushed back

The game developer breaks its promise intentionally to avoid disappointment.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds creator Brendan Greene has been vocal about his plans to get out of Early Access in just six months after the initial launch. Today, Greene conceded they will miss this deadline.

"I’ve come to realize that restricting the window to a specific month could hinder us from delivering a fully featured game and/or lead to disappointment within the community if the launch deadline is not met," Greene explained in a statement on the game's Steam page.

The announcement comes just two days after Greene reinforced his six-month time frame in an interview with RockPaperShotgun.

"I can guarantee you, six or seven months and we're out of early access," Greene said in the interview. "It's the team. It's a matter of honour, you know? We will finish this game in six months."

Greene still believes in a full release in 2017, however. The developer, who was also behind the battle royale game mods for Arma 3 and H1Z1, promised to keep on pushing weekly and monthly updates to "ensure that the game we release is the best version possible.

Similar games like H1Z1 and DayZ, which enjoyed brief spells of strong popularity, eventually stalled and became stuck in long pre-release periods. Part of PUBG's success eventually comes down to the failures of said titles, as it gathered many frustrated fans of the battle royale genre. Clearly Greene is eager to avoid that major pitfall—but not at the expense of a decent release.
