PlayStation trophy hunters can now turn their achievements into cold, hard cash

Only new trophies will apply, however.

If you spend more time hunting for PlayStation trophies than you do saving money, there might be a real solution in the cards for you. The PlayStation Rewards program will now let you cash in those hard-earned trophies for credit that can be used on your PlayStation Store account.

Under the new PlayStation Rewards program, earning 100 silver trophies nets you 100 points, 25 gold trophies gets you 250 points, and 10 platinum trophies get you 1,000 points. All points can be translated into vouchers for credit that can then be used on the PlayStation Store, with the exchange rate set at 1,000 points per $10 vouchers. Currently, this offer is only available for gamers in the US.

Unfortunately, the new program only extends to trophies earned after you’ve signed up for the program, having linked your PlayStation Network account prior to doing so. If you’ve already racked up hundreds of trophies ripe for reward, you’re going to have to start grinding new ones out. That’s a bummer, but if you’re going to be playing the games anyway, you may as well sign up and start earning so that eventually you can trade in your points for a tangible reward.

There’s a lot of work ahead of you for a mere $10, but it can add up over the years as more releases hit the shelves, and you’ve always got those older releases with simple platinums so you can farm points. Honestly, though, it may be easier to just take on a part time job if you need the extra cash for PlayStation Store goodies.
