After toppling The International 2015 champions, OG announced its arrival as a top tier Dota 2 team at the Frankfurt Major.
OG defeated the team many consider the best in the world, Team Secret, 3-1 in the final of Dota’s first circuit major, claiming the $1.11 million first prize. The champions also defeated International winners Evil Geniuses in the lower bracket final.
The hitbox-owned champions weren’t even directly invited to the tournament—they had to qualify, going undefeated against teams like Natus Vincere, Liquid, and Ninjas in Pyjamas.
Once they got to Frankfurt, the team got off to a shaky start. After a loss to Vega Squadron OG dropped down to the loser’s bracket. Despite that one loss they then tore through invited teams like International finalists CDEC, EHOME, and Virtus.pro.
With Evil Geniuses and Team Secret making up the rest of the top three, many thought OG’s improbably run would come to an end. Not content with simply achieving a top finish, the team continued to dominate in those final two matches to lift the crown.
Before the Frankfurt Major had even concluded, details were revealed of the next event. Dota‘s top teams will be headed to Shanghai in March for the next event in the new majors circuit.
