Super Mario Odyssey has finally arrived.

A new Mario game brings with it a new line of amiibo. These are a series of Nintendo toys that can interact with multiple games on the Nintendo Switch through the use of a chip in their base. Players can unlock special costumes and abilities in the game for their amiibos.

Even though a new series of amiibo are launching for Mario Odyssey—including Wedding Mario, Peach, and Bowser—you’ll want to make sure to have your old ones ready too. Sadly, however, not every amiibo will give you something cool for Mario to wear: Only a small percentage of Super Mario-themed amiibo give the player a new cosmetic item in-game.

How do I use Amiibo in the game?

Players will not be able to unlock Amiibo costumes until after beating the boss in the Cascade Kingdom. Players will then need to return to a kingdom that they have completed in order to find Uncle Amiibo, a robot that appears close to the Odyssey.

After going through the dialogue, players will be asked to press an amiibo onto an NFC point on their controller and hold down right on the D-Pad. Players will then need to place one of the Amiibo listed below to get their costume. Uncle Amiibo will also reveal the location of a moon, the main collectable of the game, on the map for players to go after.

Players can only use three amiibo every five minutes, so if you are trying to get multiple costumes, you will need to wait five minutes between scans.

Amiibo useable in-game

Only a small selection of Mario themed Amiibo give players a costume in-game. These Amiibo are showcased below.

Do amiibo give anything other than costumes?

Players can use Amiibo during their journeys to give them hints and tips. The odyssey Amiibo also give special perks to players. Wedding Peach refills hearts, Wedding Mario gives players a few seconds of invulnerability, and Wedding Bowser points out the locations of local currency to the player to help them unlock collectable in-game.
