Lucasfilm speaks up on Star Wars Battlefront 2's loot box controversy

And it's taking the fan's side.

As EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 loot box controversy continues, another Star Wars figure is sharing its perspective on the matter. Lucasfilm has come out with an official statement on Battlefront 2's loot boxes, and fans may find solace in what the studio has to say.

For those unfamiliar with the controversy, both EA and DICE found themselves under fire from fans last week after initial Battlefront 2 press coverage revealed players would have to spend around 40 hours in-game grinding for credits just to unlock heroes like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker. Meanwhile, heroes are easily purchasable through microtransactions, essentially forcing fans to play Battlefront 2 as a pay-to-win game. Oh, and when EA attempted to defend the design idea over Reddit, the backlash went viral, and EA's post became the most downvoted in Reddit history.

So, after Disney consumer products and interactive media division chairman Jimmy Pitaro phoned up EA to express the entertainment giant's disappointment regarding the controversy, EA ultimately pulled the game's microtransactions. And in an official statement obtained by the Washington Post, it turns out Lucasfilm is siding with fans over EA's microtransaction system, stressing that the publisher made the right choice to take away payments for the game's Crystals currency system.

"Star Wars has always been about the fans—and whether it's Battlefront or any other Star Wars experience, they come first," a Lucasfilm spokesman explained to the Post. "That's why we support EA's decision to temporarily remove in-game payments to address fan concerns."

While Lucasfilm may be on fans' side on this one, Battlefront 2 players should still keep an eye out during the coming weeks ahead. EA and DICE say microtransactions will come back to the game once they're reworked. So while it may take some time for the loot box system to be properly implemented, it's not going away, for better or for worse.

"The ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we’ve made changes to the game," DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson wrote earlier. "We'll share more details as we work through this."

Until then, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
