In celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Marvel vs. Capcom series, what could be more appropriate than a collection of crazy combos?
That’s the question posed by YouTube user Imojin, who put together a video demonstrating some of the wildest combos that could be strung together through the history of the series.
The roots of Marvel vs. Capcom can be traced back to 1994’s X-Men: Children of the Atom, Capcom’s first fighting game to take advantage of a licensing deal with Marvel.
Following Marvel Super Heroes in 1995, the 1996 release of X-Men vs. Street Fighter introduced the concept of combining Marvel characters with those from Capcom’s catalogue of games as well as the tag-team mechanic the series would come to be known for.
Marvel vs. Capcom in 1998 introduced both the use of assist-specialized characters and the name now assigned to the franchise as a whole. After 2000’s Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was released, the franchise became dormant for 11 years before returning with Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
The current iteration of that game, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, is still featured heavily at fighting game tournaments across the world, especially those in North America.
Unfortunately for fans of the series, the fate of any future games or even updates is currently in doubt. Marvel’s licensing deal with Capcom has expired and the company has shown no interest in working with the game developer since.
Still, given that it once took 11 years for the series to be renewed, fans can hold out some hope. They just shouldn’t expect a payoff any time soon.
