Piranha Plant was a surprise character revealed during today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct—and it’s the first DLC fighter coming to the game post-launch.
The character is set to come out at the start of 2019 and it’ll be free for anyone who buys the game in advance.
How can you get Piranha Plant for free?
You can get this character for free if you purchase Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch either digitally or physically. You’ll then need to claim your My Nintendo Gold Points for the title to receive a download link.
If you don’t have a My Nintendo account linked to your Nintendo Switch yet, you’ll need to do that first to unlock the character for free.
How do you get Gold Points?
If you buy the game digitally, your account will already have the Gold Points added to it and you won’t need to do anything else.
If you buy it physically, then you’ll need to claim your Gold Points by completing the following steps:
- Insert the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game card into the Nintendo Switch console.
- Highlight the game icon on the Nintendo Switch HOME menu.
- Press the + or – button to access the Options menu for that software.
- Highlight “My Nintendo Rewards Program,” then select “Earn Points (game card version only)” while the game is still in the system.
- Select the Nintendo account you want to receive the Gold Points on. Choose the account that is linked to your My Nintendo account.
After you’ve done this, you’ll be eligible to receive the early bonus free character. A download code will be sent to the email address that your My Nintendo account is associated with. The download code will expire by June 30, 2019.
Is there a time limit for this free DLC character?
You must purchase and claim your My Nintendo Gold Points before the end of January to get the character for free. Otherwise, it’ll become a paid character that will presumably cost around $6 to unlock.
It’s also worth mentioning that Piranha Plant is not a part of the five-fighter season pass that was announced. Piranha Plant is its own character.
When will Piranha Plant officially be released?
Piranha Plant is set to be released anytime before February 2019. An amiibo of the character is also scheduled to be released on Feb. 15, 2019.
