Quick analysis of LG’s T-pistol strat vs fnatic de_cache Starladder Semifinal

LG’s strat is meant to be strong against an A-retake setup by the CTs. It exploits an A-retake strategy by sending most of the team to door to avoid truck angle held by the CTs, by saving the nade-set for the post-plant, by having good setup in post-plant

What’s LG’s strat?

LG does an A-exec with four players buying armor and fallen getting a nade set (HE, flash, and smoke). Instead of using the smoke to block off the truck angle, LG sends 4 players door avoiding that angle. Fallen goes a-main and saves his whole nade set for the post-plant. Four LG players burst out door and plant for A-main, Fallen goes to fork and thows HE toward truck, then smokes off the left side of forklift, then he flashes high. Taco is at quad covering the A-main flank, while fnx sits at default, fallen is fighting from fork, and fer is front-red fighting CTs rotating from highway. At the same time, coldzera goes back through door to T spawn then into A-main. Cold doing this has three advantages (1) LG can’t be unknowingly flanked from door, (2) pushing back into A-main allows Cold to re-flank any CTs who had entered A-main on the retake, (3) the plant is for-A-main so Cold ends up in a favorable position to clutch the round.

What went right for LG

  • The take was smooth.
  • The post-plant set-up was strong because LG had everything covered and had good x-fire setup.
  • Coldzera’s re-flank.

What went wrong for LG

  • Olof’s flank: Fallen stayed far back in A-main until right before the rest of LG pushed out of the door. Being back in A-main allows him to listen for a fast flank, but Olof walked the whole way. LG’s plan to deal with a flank was having taco watch a-main from quad box, but taco was posted on the angle and olof peeked and 1-tapped him. Also, olof heard Coldzera wrapping around T spawn to reflank.

  • Post-plant comms. Fer seemed slow to react once olof killed taco, probably because of the comms.

  • Fallen’s smoke and flash were effective, but his HE seems ineffective. As it happened, the HE did only 30 damage to 1 player. That is probably an average result, as fnatic only had two players coming from truck side and they were separated so that you could only nade one. Instead of buying the HE, fallen could have dropped one of his teammates a p250 instead.

How good is LG’s strat in theory?

LG’s strat is meant to be strong against an A-retake setup by the CTs. It exploits an A-retake strategy by sending most of the team to door to avoid truck angle held by the CTs, by saving the nade-set for the post-plant, by having good setup in post-plant, and coldzera’s wrap to reflank A-main. If the CT’s run an A-retake setup, this strategy is very strong. There are some CT setups that would make this strategy much weaker, but those setups are much less common than the A-retake setup that fnatic used.
