Is there romance in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?
If you’re looking for traditional romance options similar to what we’ve got in Baldur’s Gate 3 or Persona, the answer is no.
But while you can’t “romance” in Expedition 33, you can strengthen your relationship levels with characters. As you grow closer to a character and reach certain levels, you can unlock combat buffs—Gradient attacks—that give you a significant advantage in battles.
In a turn-based RPG that has a heavy focus on quality combat, you’d definitely want yourself and your allies to have all the powers they can. You also earn an achievement for maxing out your relationship level with a character.
Relationship levels in Clair Obscur Expedition 33, explained
At the time of writing, you can build trust and connection with five Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 characters:
- Lune
- Esquie
- Monoco
- Maelle

There are seven relationship levels with each of these characters. To increase your relationship level with any of your allies, you need to speak to them while at the Camp, which you can do after you complete the first Act of the story and Verso joins your party. When at the Camp, just approach a character you want to bond with and when the “Do you want to spend time with…” prompt appears, confirm the action.
