Hearthstone’s next expansion, Kobolds and Catacombs, isn’t just bringing a ton of new cards into the game. It’s also bringing a whole new single player mode.
Instead of the single player missions that were part of Knights of the Frozen Throne, the next single player mode is very different, Dungeon Run was compared to a “roguelike” RPG game, fitting well with the themes of this new expansion.
Instead of building standard decks and running through a set series of bosses, in Dungeon Run you start with a smaller deck of cards. Players will then face a randomly assigned series of bosses, and add more cards to their deck each time.
Each run is eight bosses, made up from a collection of over 48. After beating a boss, you’ll be given the option of three groups of thematically linked cards to add.
Every time you lose, your deck is thrown out and you have to start over. It’s sort of like a single player Arena mode, and sort of like an unforgiving roguelike RPG adventure game.
Game director Ben Brode called it the most replayable single player mode yet, and it certainly seems that way. If it lives up to its promise, no run will ever be the same again. The mode is completely free, and won’t require a massive card collection.
Expect to hear more about Dungeon Run in the coming days during BlizzCon.
