Japan got its first taste of competitive ARMS today after the 2017 ARMS Japan Grand Prix came to a close.

After the success of the ARMS E3 Invitational in June, Nintendo set its sights on creating another esports-like tournament for the land of the rising sun a month later, announcing the event and many qualifiers.

The tournament was exclusive to Japan, as the various qualifier winners went up against each other for a shot at the title. ARMS producer Kosuke Yabuki, who is in favor of ARMS becoming an esports in the future, handed the winner his trophy after nearly three hours of competitive play.

ARMS is expected to be one of the headline games at Evo Japan next year, alongside other famous fighting titles, such as Street Fighter, Tekken, and more. The Grand Prix was a good step in the right direction—but there’s still a bit of work to do to make ARMS an Evo staple.
