Why was Numbani removed in Overwatch 2?

The beloved map has returned.

Numbani is one of Overwatch‘s most-beloved maps, with vibrant colors, a recognizable music theme, and fun strategic corners.

It’s been a while since it was featured in the game’s map rotation, however. Since many fans were nostalgic about playing games on it, they tried to wander the map in custom matches.

There, they realized the map was simply removed from Overwatch 2 when it was released. It worried them since other maps outside map pools were still in custom options, such as 2CP maps.

Shortly after, they discovered it was back in the map pool as part of Season Three. Numbani can now be played in both casual and competitive matches —but it’s still removed from custom game options. Here is the situation explained.

Why was Numbani removed in Overwatch 2?

On Feb. 7, Numbani returned to Overwatch 2 alongside Season Three. It was quietly added to quick play and competitive map pools.

Overwatch 2 fans were worried they would never see Numbani again since it wasn’t in the sequel at release. It didn’t appear in custom game options, and the developer still hasn’t explained why or whether it’s going to return in custom games.

It may have worked on bug fixes and adjustments from the map to prepare for its return in Overwatch 2, but nothing has been confirmed at the moment.

The map returned with a few changes in the Attacking team’s spawn location. The airport was finally fixed several years after it was destroyed, when the addition of Doomfist was teased by Blizzard Entertainment.

Players have been speculating that the new airport changes might tease another change coming to Overwatch 2. A few destinations have been adjusted in the new spawn: some 2CP maps were removed from the destinations panel, and others were added.

What caught the attention of fans is the addition of the destination Gdansk, a Polish city. Some think this could be a first hint at an upcoming map with Season Four.

Meanwhile, players can discover the new map that was added alongside Season Three, Antarctica.
