All Dragonriding abilities and passives, and how to unlock them in World of Warcraft

All in one place!

Dragonriding is an interactive version of flying packed with unique features like abilities and passives, talents and glyphs, and customizations. Although these features will play a huge role in your Dragonriding adventures, abilities and spells will directly impact how you fly across the Dragon Isles.

Dragonriding abilities and passives run on Vigor and will help you reach otherwise unimaginable heights and speeds as you speed through the isles. While you’ll immediately unlock some abilities, the others are hiding behind the quests and main storyline progress.

So, here’s the list of all Dragonriding abilities and passives featured in Dragonflight and instructions on how to unlock them all.

How to unlock all Dragonriding abilities in WoW Dragonflight

To unlock the first four Dragonriding abilities in Dragonflight, you’ll need to progress through the main storyline of the Dragon Isles. Since you’ll have four active spells, each spell will be tied to a specific zone.

So, to learn Surge Forward, you’ll need to complete the storyline of the Waking Shores. For Skyward Ascent, you’ll need to complete the campaign in Ohn’ahran Plains. Whirling Surge will be unlocked after you complete the Calling the Blue Dragon quest in the Azure Span. You can unlock Bronze Timelock after completing the Back to the Future quest in Thaldraszus.

In Patch 10.0.7, Blizzard added two more Dragonriding abilities—Airborne Recovery and Aerial Halt. While Aerial Halt is an active spell that allows you to reduce the movement speed of your Dragonriding drake, Airborne Recovery will help you regenerate Vigor if you use Aerial Halt while affected by Thrill of the Skies. Both of these abilities will be unlocked by collecting eight Dragonriding glyphs on the Forbidden Reach and using the Dragonriding talent points.

Patch 10.1 has two more Dragonriding abilities, specially designed for the underground environment—Ground Skimming and Land’s Blessing. Just like Airborne Recovery and Aerial Halt, these two abilities aren’t hiding behind extensive quests. Instead, you simply need to fly around Zaralek Cavern, collect Dragonriding glyphs and unlock two new abilities using the talent points.

In Patch 10.2, players’ Dragonriding drakes will have to learn three abilities—Swift Skimming, Wind’s Respite, and Second Wind. While the first two are passives, Second Wind is already my favorite ability that will generate one Vigor. It’s an active spell and it has three charges, but a long cooldown of three minutes. To unlock all three abilities, collect all Dragonriding Glyphs in the Emerald Dream.

  • Dragonriding Basics: While falling from a high location, your Dragon Isle drake extends its wings to propel you both forward. Pointing yourself downward grants more momentum. Evening out can transfer that momentum forward. Pointing yourself upward slows you down. When at your slowest, you will start to fall slowly toward the ground. You also gain access to the following abilities–Surge Forward and Skyward Ascent.
  • Vigor: Dragonriding abilities spend Vigor. Spending time on the ground, whether mounted or dismounted, regenerates one Vigor every 30 seconds.
  • Lift Off: When mounted on a dragonriding mount, double jump to launch upward and start gliding forward.
  • Thrill of the Skies: While dragonriding at high speeds, you regenerate one Vigor every 15 seconds.
  • Winds of the Isles: You can detect and utilize gale winds that redirect your flight and propel you onward, boosting your speed in the direction of the gale.
  • Airborne Recovery: Activating Aerial Halt while affected by Thrill of the Skies generates one Vigor.
  • Ground Skimming – When Dragonriding near the ground, you regenerate one Vigor every 30 seconds. This effect does not occur while affected by Thrill of the Skies.
  • Land’s Blessing – Ground Skimming regenerates one Vigor every 20 seconds.
  • Swift Skimming (Passive): Ground Skimming can occur now while affected by Thrill of the Skies.
  • Wind’s Respite (Passive): After activating Aerial Halt, experience a brief moment of weightlessness as the effects of gravity are reduced for four seconds.

All Dragonriding actives in WoW Dragonflight

  • Surge Forward: Flap forward, gaining a small burst of momentum. (Costs one Vigor)
  • Skyward Ascent: Flap upwards, gaining a small burst of momentum and altitude. Pressing the Jump key twice while grounded will automatically use Skyward Ascent. (Costs one Vigor)
  • Whirling Surge: Spiral forward to cover a great distance, gaining a large burst of momentum. (30-second cooldown and costs three Vigor)
  • Bronze Timelock: Mark a waypoint of your current position for three minutes. Once you have a waypoint created, this spell turns into Bronze Rewind, which can be used to return you to that waypoint. You cannot create a waypoint while flying, but you can return to that waypoint while in the air. (three-minute cooldown)
  • Aerial Halt: Flap back, reducing forward movement.
  • Second Wind (Three charges, three minute recharge): Instantly generate one Vigor.
