Overwatch support for Project Scorpio: Blizzard will “wait and see”

Microsoft says Project Scorpio is "the most powerful console ever."

Blizzard isn’t ruling out 4K support on console, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan said in an interview with IBTimes UK.

Overwatch is already available in 4K on PC, so it’s something that’s possible on console. “With both the advancements that Sony and Microsoft have made to their platforms, we’re super eager to support in whatever way we can,” Kaplan said. “We take kind of a wait and see approach.”

And Blizzard’s Overwatch engine team loves supporting anything that makes the game look better, Kaplan added. “As long as we don’t break the game in some other way, or incur some technical cost that is prohibitive, we would obviously try to go along with the advancements, and be very supportive of advancements on all of our platforms.”

Microsoft’s Xbox One upgrade, Project Scorpio, is being billed as the most powerful console ever created—but until today, Microsoft has been tight-lipped on what that actually means. Xbox One games will reportedly run better on Project Scorpio, even without additional support, Microsoft said.

Microsoft’s Project Scorpio specs, released today by Eurogamer, are certainly impressive, but what it means for Overwatch and other Xbox One games has yet to be seen. The console is expected out in the fall of this year, and pricing details have not been released.

In November, Blizzard patched the PlayStation 4 version of Overwatch with support for the PlayStation 4 Pro, however, it’s difference is minimal, adding “better texture filtering and UI enhancements,” Blizzard told Eurogamer.
